Jack Explains The Creation of 'This Is Japan'

Here is a letter from Jack :)

'Hi Robin,

In answer to Wilson McPhert,

(Ed: Our fellow J-Gas Member and Jack Green Videographer Wilson McPhert had previously asked about Jack's hit single, 'This Is Japan', and how the song came into existance. Jack was very elaborate and open in his explanation.)

'I wrote this song for the Humanesque album. I wrote it with the bottom E - string of the guitar tuned down to D, something that had been shown to me by another musician friend, David Bradnum. I also wrote the song 'Murder' with the guitar tuned the same way.

I had been to Japan in 1973 with T-Rex and had woken up jet lagged on the first day of the tour. We were staying in the Tokyo Hilton and I had woken up at dawn. The scene that presented itself to me as I pulled back the curtains was just magical. The sun was just starting to come up over Tokyo, and there down below, just next to the hotel was a Shinto shrine and as I stood watching it, a young girl walked round the shrine offering prayers up to her god. It was quite touching.

I took a photograph.

I wrote the song with the photograph in mind. I wrote the lyrics to the first verse then Les Adey and I finished off the rest of the lyrics between us. Some of Les's lyrics in that song were very good.

Some tracks from Jack's forthcoming solo record are completed, the album is not. There are a great many additional songs, since Jack writes constantly and doesn't do things on a small scale. With all this wonderful technology at his fingertips, this body of work could even become a double album, hopefully. Which would also be great, since Jack has not released a solo double album.

Between work, life, studio and his book, he's a busy man!

The Only Stencil That Matters..!

Jack recently sent me some great concert reviews and I saw this photograph in one of them and decided to create a cool stencil for his many fans who enjoy his black and white artwork.

And for the record, Jack doesn't condone graffiti or guerilla paint tagging in any form so if you intend to use this image for public display, make darn sure that you have permission to display it.

Making a poster to show people is the best way to go if you want to display it. We'd all prefer that no one painted Jack's image on someone else's property because this reflects on the artist, not the fool who decided Jack would look good on the corner pub's brickwork.

Jack does look good everywhere, but only in good taste everyone. Thanks for complying!

Gord asks, 'What are the interesting similarities and/or strange quirks of working with Ritchie Blackmore and Marc Bolan? Were they difficult to work with? Were either of them egotistical?'

Greetings El Presidente and Hi Gord,
Yes, they were both hugely egotistical but in different ways.
Ritchie had some strange quirks, like he would not be in the same room as a Fender Rhodes piano and would have it removed before he entered, and would only stay in haunted hotels
having sent a roadie out beforehand to scout them out. He is an intelligent and well read person as well as being a fantastically proficient guitarist,
so all his idiosyncrasies just made him all the more endearing.

Marc on the other hand, during the time I was with him was going through some difficult times. He believed all the hype that was written about him and would make up some
more for good measure. He was a hard guy to work for but I was very pleased to be working with him and will always be indebted to him for giving me a break.

Allison McDonald of Aberdeen asked, 'Do you make notes for songs as you go along or just get into full blown writing mode, like a big cup of coffee and a comfortable chair, pens and paper? Do you like to write outdoors? e.g. sitting in a cafe, etc'

How’s the Granite City?
The most important thing to do when you’re writing is to try to get yourself into an inspired frame of mind. Sometimes I’ll make notes; sometimes I’ll watch
a film and jot down pieces of dialogue or phrases.
In the 80s I was, for a time, a house writer for RCA. What that is, is my publisher would put me together with other signed writers to write songs. I would
turn up at their door, having never met the person and be expected to write something. This would usually involve them saying “Do you know such and
such a song?” I’d say yes, then they’d say “Let's write something like that” I found that was a really soul destroying way of writing songs. I’m not a big fan of
writing outside, unless it’s in my own garden. I like to have my own things around me when I write. I also enjoy writing with people I trust and being able to
bounce ideas around. I hate being in a café by myself.

You’ve got to remember I was a flower child of the 60s, one of the beautiful people.
I was no different from anybody else that I knew. There were very few musicians I knew who didn’t take drugs. We all did. Mostly Hash rather than grass.
I also took just about every other drug going, but settled down with Hash. We took drugs in those days to “Expand our minds” I watched a lot of people
expand their minds so much they just exploded and became gibbering wrecks. Those people usually did too much LSD. I don’t do anything anymore.
It gets harder to handle when you get older.

Dear Mel,
I used to be more of a night time person when I worked in the music industry but nowadays I wake up early and go to bed early too. If I’m making
films I find mid morning quite a creative time and for writing music, late afternoon/evening.
We both cook.

Dear Stacy,
My favourite sport is Football, or what you would call Soccer. The English Premier League is the best in the world. There is no particular team I support; I just like to watch good football.
In answer to your other question: The best form of contraception for a man of my age is to take his clothes off.

Harris of London, England has a multi-question, 'What is your favorite guitar chord? What is/was your least favorite? Favorite amplifier? Modern equipment or vintage? Least favorite instrument you've ever made the mistake of buying? Ever smashed a guitar (on purpose)? Accidentally broken a friend's instrument?'

Harris of London – Sounds like a clothing manufacturer. (Sorry Harris, only joking.) That is a very strange question. All the chords are of equal importance, depending on which key you’re playing in.

Favourite Amplifier? Hmm.. I’ve liked so many amps over the years. I would use different amps for different sounds. Marshall 4x12 for big powerful chords. Fender twin for clean country picking. Mesa boogie for lead.

Modern amps, vintage guitars every time. I was once given a blank cheque by Marc Bolan to go out and buy a guitar. I bought a reasonably priced Gibson Melody Maker (After watching Hank Marvin play it in the shop and give it the thumbs up) I should have bought a Les Paul.

I could never bring myself to smash up an instrument. Once when I was at Shepperton studios, I asked Pete Townsend what his favourite guitar was. He shrugged and said he wasn’t bothered. Seeing the expression on my face, he motioned me to follow and showed me into a film hanger which was almost full of guitars for as far as the eye could see. So for him, smashing up a guitar was no big deal but for me, every instrument is precious. I’ve never broken a friend’s instrument, if I did, I’d be mortified.

Dear Mille
When I was living in Ibiza I got quite ill. My weight dropped to about 8 stone and I thought I was dying. It wasn’t till much later that I was diagnosed as diabetic. I had all the classic symptoms such as a raging thirst. That is when I first started drinking. I had never been a drinker before that time. I knew something was really wrong when I woke up one morning in the garden with my arms wrapped round the dog. When I got back to London I got myself checked out and was very pleased to find it was diabetes and that I wasn’t dying after all. I was put on Insulin, and I’m now probably healthier than I was before I was diabetic.

Dear Edmondo,
As Woody Allen said, “I have no fear of flying; I just have a fear of falling” As far as I know, I don’t have any phobias. My main fear is being duped, of having the wool pulled over my eyes. I can’t think of anything worse. Well I can, but I’m not going to.

Simon Vello of Calgary, Alberta asks 'What is the last concert you attended?' and 'Has this J. Green Society helped connect you with friends from the past?'

The last concert I saw was Desmond Dekker not long before he died. He was fantastic and so was his band. Jackie and I also went
to the opera recently and saw Verdi’s Aida.

Yes, you wouldn’t believe the people that have contacted me that I hadn’t seen for 30/40 years.

Rare Jack & Metropolis Photograph!

Jack had another band called Metropolis for a while. Here's a very hard to find photograph sent to us just yesterday by Jack himself...

In the photo from left to right is Gordon Edwards, Pete Tolson, The Fabulous Jack Green and Skip Allen.

Jack has recently written several more songs for the newest Jack Green solo album, including one that he just can't get out of his head!

(Can't wait to get it stuck in our heads!)

We've just sent off a new batch of fan questions to Jack and he will answer them when he can get a few minutes to relax and write his very interesting thoughts down.

To everyone who writes, please understand that some days we receive more mail than most people can comprehend.

And a brief and kind note to everyone who sends us email with questions for Jack. Sending us multiple emails with the same question isn't the best way to get Jack's attention. If anything multiple emails might impede your question actually getting answered, so one email is really all you need to send to us.

We do review each and every email through this site on an incoming basis and yes, Jack is too busy to answer fan mail personally but he does enjoy your questions and appreciates your interest in his life, music and career.

We don't give out The Jack Green Appreciation Society email addresses due to the volume of emails we receive, it's nothing personal, it just keeps things on a professional basis, just like Jack keeps his own priorities in order. We keep fantastic records of all communications, and not all the site comments are published, but we do our best to get them on site within a few days. Robin and Gord do their very best to answer all of your questions when email addresses are left with us.

We understand how important it is to be able to access Jack's music and believe us, there's nothing more we all want than to have all of his solo and related music on CD. For those patient Jack Green album and vinyl fans who seem to know when we find Jack's solo records on LP, we thank you for your patience.

With over 170 people in the current queue waiting for Jack's solo records and the Humanesque CD, you can well understand that there is always excitement when people receive Jack's solo music!

Here's a classic example of how patient Jack's fans are, Jack Green Appreciation Society Member Simon waited almost ten years to get the Humanesque CD prior to joining the J-Gas Gang and only this summer did he receive a copy of 'Latest Game'. Never once did he ever complain about the waiting. Good things come to those who wait :)

Jack & Nino

This is a superb photograph of Jack and his old pal Nino, and another lady friend, sent to us just days ago from Jack himself. Nino is directly (and indirectly...) responsible for persuading Jack to audition for the musical 'Hair' in the role of 'Woof'. And we all know what happened after that, T-Rex, Jack's solo career and a million adventures.

I'll bet that Nino has a few stories about Jack that he could tell us, can't you Nino? So do send us some of the ripest stories about Jack that you remember Nino.

Jack also sent some excerpts from his upcoming autobiography to us, and the stories are really great. The honesty cuts through to the bone, something that doesn't always happen in an autoboigraphy.

We continue the search for a reputable book publisher for Jack in Canada and other parts of the world.

Jack & Henry: Friends Forever

Did you know that Jack was slated to be the opening act for John Lennon's 'Double Fantasy' comeback tour before his tragic demise? It is completely true, Yoko Ono Lennon had wanted Jack to be John's supporting act and Jack was more than ready for that tour.

Jack Green (born March 12, 1951, Glasgow, Scotland) played with Marc Bolan & T. Rex between 1973 and 1974, then with The Pretty Things between 1974 and 1976. Later Jack Green went solo with the smash albums `Humanesque`, Reverse Logic`, Mystique`and `Latest Game`.

Green`s many contributions on the Pretty Things’ ‘Silk Torpedo’ record go largely uncredited. This rare classic album is the darling of the critic and fans.

Green`s musical genius is not to be denied. His popularity in Canada and Japan remains unwavered over the years and his fanclub The Jack Green Appreciation Society` has a worldwide membership that charges no annual membership dues.

2009 sees Jack Green in the midst of recording his long overdue fifth solo album, possibly titled A Night In Morocco.

He has a successful film production company in the Isle of Wight.

There is a country artist with the same name as Jack Green. this person bears no resemblence to the Rocker Jack Green.

Vanna Bonta and Jack Green Photograph

Of all the odd questions we here at The Jack Green Appreciation Society receive, one has come up more than a few times over the past couple of years. "Who is the great looking blonde in the red outfit in Jack's 'One By One' video???"

"That's easy!" says Robin, "Her name is Vanna Bonta and she's still doing poetry, writing books, performing and creating artwork. She's also still a great bowler, as you can see in Jack's 'One By One' video. The producer didn't realize how good a bowler she was and gave her a larger part in Jack's video. She was also pretty good on the trampoline, almost a good as Jack was."
